A $2.4 million California renovation is getting a high-tech USGA boost

INDIO, California —  Every golfer has had this thought at one time or another. Playing a course, either familiar or new, a golfer will look at some feature on the course, a bunker, a lake or a piece of grass that seems completely unreachable and said, “Who in the world would hit the ball over there? I couldn’t hit the ball there if I tried.”

USA TODAY

It’s fair to say that almost every golf course has some area that is maintained but receives minimal, if any, traffic during a typical day’s play. When a golf course like the South Course at Shadow Hills Golf Club near Palm Springs, decides it needs some renovation on its layout, where traffic flows on the course is the kind of information that can be vital.

That’s where a GPS tracking system comes in, like the one the United States Golf Association offers. For a fee, the USGA can set a golf course up with a transponder system to track where there is and isn’t traffic on the course.

“How far right are golfers hitting it in the rough on the sixth hole so we can introduce a low-maintenance rough area to save costs without slowing pace of play?” the USGA website says about the system. “How far can we move up the start of the fairway on the 12th hole without creating a carry that is too long from the forward tee?”

Shadow Hills opened in 2004 as a course for the residents at the 55-and-over Sun City development in north Indio, but is also open to public play. It is one of the latest clubs to use the USGA transponder service. Management company Troon and Shadow Hills have put the data from the transponders to good use, general manager Scott Winant said.

“We put these little transponders on all the golfers for a week or so to see where they went on the course,” Winant said. “What sand traps weren’t in play at all, which ones were.”

The eighth green may be one place bunkers are removed or changed in size as Shadow Hill Golf Club renovates the course this summer. A fourth bunker even farther to the left of the green makes for plenty of sand on the par-4.

The results of that transponder survey have led Shadow Hills to shut down their South Course for the summer, starting May 18 – the property’s 18-hole par-3 North Course will not be impacted – for some significant renovations. With Gary Brawley as the architect in charge of the changesand Integrity Golf doing the constructionas it has done for so many desert courses in recent years, the project will have a wide scope. That will start with information from the transponders, focusing mostly on bunkers.

“We are going to remove about 40 percent of the square footage of bunkers, either reducing size or changing the shape of them a little bit,” Winant said. Winant added that some bunkers will be removed completely in the project.

The South Course is known in part for its bunkers, large bunkers with high faces along the fairways and near the greens. Other work on the bunkers will also be part of the process, refreshing the 20-year-old course designed by Schmitt-Curley architects.

“We are going to remove all the sand from the bunkers and we are going to re-line all the bunkers,” the general manager said. “We are doing spray-on liners so we won’t have the liners sticking up anymore.”

Like most golf courses that do renovations these days, the focus will also be on the greens on the South Course. Bermuda greens that are overseeded with cool-weather grass all tend to shrink over time. Brawley and Shadow Hills will take the existing greens back to their original size, adding as much as four to six inches around the entire collar of the green. But unlike many desert courses, the South Course will not be converting to the popular MiniVerde grass for its greens.

“We are not going to change that yet,” Winant said. “It might be something we look at down the road as Troon does some more research on an annual grass that you don’t have to overseed.”

The 18th green near the clubhouse of the South Course at Shadow Hills Golf Club in Indio. The course will close on May 18 for the summer for renovations on bunkers, greens and tee boxes.

Other work on the golf courses will include irrigation work on some areas that get too much water from the irrigation sprinklers, but there won’t be a complete overhaul or changing of the irrigation system, Winant said. Some areas where Bermuda grass no longer grows will be sodded with Bermuda to aid in overseeding in the fall.

“We have wet spots just due to drainage issues and we are going to fix all of that,” he said. “We’ll do some of the landscaping on the course.  We are overseeding wall to wall now instead of browning out the rough.“

The tees on the golf courses will also be leveled to make up for 20 years of traffic. It all might seem like a lot, but it is work that can be completed in one summer.

“It’s going to be a pretty big project. It’s about $2.4 million,” Winant said. “We’ll be back up after overseed. So the traditional date that we would open up, about the first of November, that’s what we are planning.”

Not only was Washington's star first baseman, who started every game, named to the All-Big Ten First Team, but she also found herself on the conference's All-Defense Team.

As the centerpiece of coach Heather Tarr's lineup, almost exclusively hitting out of the No. 2 spot, DeBoer led theHuskieswith her 18 home runs (tied for No. 10 in the Big Ten), 45 runs scored, 1.221 OPS, and 36 walks.

DeBoer also ranked inside the top five on the Huskies in practically every offensive category with her .359 batting average, 122 total bases, 60 hits, and 51 runs batted in.

Defensively, she was a rock-solid target at first base as the Huskies finished No. 4 in the conference with a .997 fielding percentage. On a team-high 336 chances, she committed just one error, good for a .997 fielding percentage with 326 putouts and 9 assists with 11 double plays turned.

Now, as the Huskies await their destination for the NCAA Tournament, Tarr has several high-end players to lean on in the postseason, with DeBoer being one of five Huskies who received all-conference honors on Monday.

Correa was injured Tuesday while taking swings in the batting cage before a gameagainst the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“I was hitting in the cage, normal day, feeling great,” he said. “I went through my whole routine, took a swing and just felt a pop. It just completely snapped on me and then I fell to the ground and couldn’t put weight on it.”

Correa was on crutches and in a walking boot Wednesday morning at the ballpark after seeing a foot specialist. He said he would seek some other opinions before scheduling the surgery.

Correa, 31, said the injury was a “complete tear” and his recovery is expected to take six to eight months.

It’s yet another blow to an Astros team that has dealt with scores of injuries this season, includingan oblique injury to Yainer Diazthat landed the catcher on the injured list Tuesday.

Correa, who is back with the Astros after last summer’s blockbuster trade from the Twins, played third base for Houston last season with Jeremy Peña at shortstop. But Correa has been playing shortstop recently with Peña out with a hamstring injury.

Correa is batting .279 with three home runs and 16 RBIs.

Isa Torres builds GOAT case for FSU softball. Is she already? Vote now

WhenIsa Torres’ career is complete, she will be etched intoFlorida State softballhistory. The only real question is how prominently.

USA TODAY

Is Torres merely one of the program’s greats underLonni Alameda— or is she the standard?

That distinction is worth examining now, even if it risks sounding like a prisoner-of-the-moment argument. What the junior shortstop is producing this season isn’t just dominant. It borders on unprecedented, both within the ACC and nationally. And if it continues into aWomen’s College World Series run,the conversation won’t just be fair — it may be settled.

A season rarely seen

Torres isn’t simply having a good year. The newly crowned ACC Player of the Yearis authoring one of the most statistically overwhelming seasons in school history.

Through 159 at-bats, she’s hitting .546 — a number that, if sustained, would shatter Florida State’s single-season record of .432. She’s already compiled 88 hits, putting her on pace to eclipse the program’s mark of 99, while also threatening records in slugging percentage and home runs.

The advanced numbers are just as staggering. Torres ranks among the ACC leaders in nearly every major category: a .603 on-base percentage, a 1.019 slugging percentage and a 1.622 OPS. Those are video game figures in a conference known for elite pitching.

And then there are the moments that elevate a great season into something historic.

In March, Torres set an NCAA record with 16 consecutive hits — 16-for-16 over a stretch that defies logic at this level. She followed it with a streak of reaching base safely in 23 consecutive plate appearances, the third-longest run in NCAA history.

Just as impressive is what she’s done defensively. Torres has not committed an error all season, anchoring the infield with a perfect fielding percentage as a shortstop. For a player carrying such an offensive load, that level of defensive consistency only strengthens her case.

Context matters — especially in the postseason

Florida State has no shortage of legends. From Jessica van der Linden toLacey Waldrop,Jessie WarrenandSydney Sherill, the Seminoles have produced national players of the year and championship anchors. Greatness in Tallahassee isn’t measured solely in numbers; it’s defined by postseason impact.

Isa Torres celebrates as she hit two home runs for Florida State, who hosted the Florida Gators at JoAnne Graf Field on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.

That’s the final piece of Torres’ argument.

If she guides Florida State on a deep run in Oklahoma City — or better yet, delivers a national title while maintaining anything close to this pace — her season won’t just be memorable. It will be transformational.

Fair or not, the sport’s ultimate measure still comes in June. Torres has already built a résumé worthy of national player of the year consideration. Matching it with postseason hardware would elevate her from elite to undeniable.

The verdict — for now

It may still be early to unanimously crown Torres as the greatest in Florida State history. Careers, not two months, typically decide that label.

But it’s no longer premature to say she’s making the strongest single-season case the program has ever seen.

And if this trajectory continues, the question won’t be whether Isa Torres belongs in the conversation.

It will be whether anyone else still does.
