Isa Torres builds GOAT case for FSU softball. Is she already? Vote now

WhenIsa Torres’ career is complete, she will be etched intoFlorida State softballhistory. The only real question is how prominently.

USA TODAY

Is Torres merely one of the program’s greats underLonni Alameda— or is she the standard?

That distinction is worth examining now, even if it risks sounding like a prisoner-of-the-moment argument. What the junior shortstop is producing this season isn’t just dominant. It borders on unprecedented, both within the ACC and nationally. And if it continues into aWomen’s College World Series run,the conversation won’t just be fair — it may be settled.

A season rarely seen

Torres isn’t simply having a good year. The newly crowned ACC Player of the Yearis authoring one of the most statistically overwhelming seasons in school history.

Through 159 at-bats, she’s hitting .546 — a number that, if sustained, would shatter Florida State’s single-season record of .432. She’s already compiled 88 hits, putting her on pace to eclipse the program’s mark of 99, while also threatening records in slugging percentage and home runs.

The advanced numbers are just as staggering. Torres ranks among the ACC leaders in nearly every major category: a .603 on-base percentage, a 1.019 slugging percentage and a 1.622 OPS. Those are video game figures in a conference known for elite pitching.

And then there are the moments that elevate a great season into something historic.

In March, Torres set an NCAA record with 16 consecutive hits — 16-for-16 over a stretch that defies logic at this level. She followed it with a streak of reaching base safely in 23 consecutive plate appearances, the third-longest run in NCAA history.

Just as impressive is what she’s done defensively. Torres has not committed an error all season, anchoring the infield with a perfect fielding percentage as a shortstop. For a player carrying such an offensive load, that level of defensive consistency only strengthens her case.

Context matters — especially in the postseason

Florida State has no shortage of legends. From Jessica van der Linden toLacey Waldrop,Jessie WarrenandSydney Sherill, the Seminoles have produced national players of the year and championship anchors. Greatness in Tallahassee isn’t measured solely in numbers; it’s defined by postseason impact.

Isa Torres celebrates as she hit two home runs for Florida State, who hosted the Florida Gators at JoAnne Graf Field on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.

That’s the final piece of Torres’ argument.

If she guides Florida State on a deep run in Oklahoma City — or better yet, delivers a national title while maintaining anything close to this pace — her season won’t just be memorable. It will be transformational.

Fair or not, the sport’s ultimate measure still comes in June. Torres has already built a résumé worthy of national player of the year consideration. Matching it with postseason hardware would elevate her from elite to undeniable.

The verdict — for now

It may still be early to unanimously crown Torres as the greatest in Florida State history. Careers, not two months, typically decide that label.

But it’s no longer premature to say she’s making the strongest single-season case the program has ever seen.

And if this trajectory continues, the question won’t be whether Isa Torres belongs in the conversation.

It will be whether anyone else still does.

Merritt Island beach volleyball claims regional title

Merritt Island beach volleyball faced a familiar foe on Tuesday, May 5, in the Class 2A, Region 2 final in New Smyrna Beach, the reigning state runner-up.

USA TODAY

Tuesday was the second meeting of the season with No. 2 seed New Smyrna Beach winning the regular season meeting 4-1 on March 11.

In front of its home fans, No. 1 seed Merritt Island flipped the result with a 3-2 victory to claim the regional title and punch its ticket to Tallahassee for the state semifinals.

“Super proud of them. They worked really hard,” Merritt Island head coach Angie Patrick said. “Just win their last game at home is just pretty sweet.”

The Barracudas won the first match of the duel 21-11, 21-18. On center court, senior Delaney Petit and junior Reece Loggins evened things up with a 3-set win.

Merritt Island carried that momentum, winning the next two matches to secure the regional title. Mustangs junior Sadie McClellan and sophomore Gena Walters won in straight sets 21-19, 21-15.

On center court, juniors Bella Becker and Amber Ives clinched the win with a 21-19, 21-13 sweep.

“The first 10 minutes or so, I was a little concerned because we seemed hesitant and nervous. I think we started to find our groove and then I felt better because they got this now,” Patrick said. “They were feeling more confident and moving better. I think just them turning that dial, flipping that switch and realizing what was on the line. Just seeing them go out and compete was a great thing.”

Petit/Loggins battled back to earn Merritt Island’s first win of the match. The No. 2 pair dropped the first set 16-21 before rallying to win 21-17, 15-13.

“I think just to get through each pass and talk to each other about hitting shots, where to go really helped us,” Petit said.

Merritt Island dropped three of its first seven matches of the season. Since then, the Mustangs have rattled off 13 consecutive wins to advance to the state semifinals.

They’ve achieved that with Petit as the lone senior on the squad.

“Since the beginning, we always came out here with 110 percent effort and always pushed to be successful,” Petit said.

Merritt Island last played in Tallahassee in 2024 when it was among the final 16 teams in the state. For the first time since the sport expanded to three classes, it’s among the last four teams standing in Class 2A.

“We went to state a couple years ago and lost in a region semifinal last year, which was very tough,” Petit said. “Coming out, being very strong and compete very hard against a team we lost earlier in the season to was very exciting. Everyone cheering and being excited for our team helped us a lot.”

The Mustangs compete in the Class 2A state semifinals on Friday, May 8, at Florida State University. A victory would propel them to the championship match on Saturday, May 9.

“Same thing that happened (Tuesday),” Patrick said. “We all got to come out ready and strong and not nervous, back on our heels and just have confidence. More than anything, I just want to enjoy this ride with them. I want them to enjoy it and know this is going to be a blast.”

36 Most Jaw-Dropping Outfits From The 2026 MET Gala, Including Nicole Kidman

If there’s one night celebrities are officially allowed to be extra, it’s theMet Gala.

Bored Panda

The theme for the2026 Met Galaand concurrent spring 2026 museum exhibition was “Costume Art.” And the best-dressed stars took this year’s “Fashion is Art” dress code very seriously.

The guests didn’t just dress up. They turned themselves into walking masterpieces, pulling inspiration from paintings, history lessons, and even their own personal lives.

One carried a mango on the Met steps, while another admitted their Met Gala prep included petting a donkey..

Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman posed with her daughter on the carpet and said, “She had to go to school tomorrow morning.”

Lauren Sánchez Bezos revisited a controversy with her 2026 Met Gala outfit.Arriving solo without her billionaire husband Jeff Bezos, the author and philanthropist wore a navy Schiaparelli gown inspired by one of the most famous portraits in The Met’s collection: Madame X by John Singer Sargent. The 1883 painting once caused an uproar for showing its subject, French socialite Madame Pierre Gautreau, wearing a black fitted gown that had one strap slipping off her shoulder. The scandalous painting was kept hidden by Sargent for three decades until he directly sold it The Met.“When you stand in front of it now, you see a beautiful woman,” Sánchez Bezos toldVogue.“For me, the image represents how fashion and cultural standards can shift over time. Today, a strap is a strap, but back when Madame X was painted by Sargent, a strap was a scandal.”

And then I have this floor-length bow that falls off the back of it.
